The American Hockey Coaches Association is pleased to present the "Coaching Staffs of the Month" for the month of November 2003.
The following coaching staffs have been recognized for their team's outstanding performance in the month of November:
DIVISION I MEN - BROWN
The Brown men's ice hockey team, under the direction of seventh-year Head Coach Roger Grillo, is off to its best start since the 1975-76 season with a 6-1-1 record. The Bears opened the 2003-2004 campaign with a 2-0 shutout over Harvard, the second straight year they have opened the season with a shutout victory over the Crimson. After dropping a 3-1 decision at Dartmouth, Brown rebounded the next night with a 3-1 win over Vemont, and the Bears have gone 4-0-1 since then for a current winning streak of six games (5-0-1). Grillo guided the team to two ECAC weekend sweeps with wins over Yale (6-0) and Princeton (5-1) in mid-November, and wins over Clarkson (4-1) and St. Lawrence (8-0), the Bears' largest margin of victory since a 10-1 win over Air Force in 1994. Currently, the Bears lead the nation in several categories, including team defense and power-play, ranking second in penalty-kill.
Grillo is assisted by Danny Brooks, Mark Workman and Tony Ciresi.
DIVISION I WOMEN - DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth (8-1) opened the season as the #2 ranked team in the country and has stayed there ever since. The Big Green holds wins over three ranked opponents: Providence, Princeton, and Minnesota-Duluth. Dartmouth's victory over No.4 Minnesota-Duluth was its first in five meetings over the past two years. The Big Green dropped three contests to Duluth, then fell, 6-2, on Nov. 28th before breaking the streak Nov. 29. Dartmouth fell behind in that game, 2-0, after one period but rallied for a 4-2 win with three second period goals.
First-year head coach Mark Hudak is assisted by Kristina Guarino and Rob Morgan.
DIVISION III MEN - LAKE FOREST
At 8-0-1, the Lake Forest College men's hockey team is off to its best start since the 1977-78 season. The Foresters are averaging more than five goals per game and have allowed just two per contest. It has truly been a team effort to this point as 16 different players have scored a goal and 23 have recorded at least one point. Junior Robin Charest leads the squad with 13 points and 8 assists and freshman Cam Doull has scored a team-high six goals. The goaltending tandem of juniors Joel Cameron and Cody Brown have combined for a .938 goals against average. Lake Forest has defeated three teams that were ranked in the top 15 (USCHO) at the time of the game and is now ranked #7 itself. Head Coach Tony Fritz is now just seven victories shy of 300 in his career in his 26th year.
Fritz is assisted by Chris Gallagher, Ken Klein, and Bill Pickrum.
DIVISION III WOMEN - PLATTSBURGH STATE
First-year head coach Kevin Houle and his assistant, Allison Coomey, have the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team off to a great start.
The Cardinals were undefeated in November (8-0-1) despite playing just one game at home. Plattsburgh opened the season and the month of November with a win (4- 3) and a tie (2-2) at Manhattanville. They outscored opponents 59-12 and finished the month 6-0 against ECAC West opponents.
The Cards are currently ranked second in the USCHO.com poll. |
