Fifth Annual AHCA 'All-American Scholars' Announced for Men’s DI Hockey

532 DI Men Recognized by the AHCA for 2020-21 Excellence

The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) is once again recognizing varsity ice hockey players who compiled exceptional results in the classroom during the 2020-21 season with the announcement of the fifth annual “Krampade All-American Scholars.” Due to the effects of Covid-19, the AHCA adopted revised criteria for this year’s honorees. To qualify, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.6 GPA for each semester, regardless of whether the school’s hockey team was able to play this season or not. The names of 532 Division I men are being released today - their Division I women counterparts were announced separately today. Division II-III honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.

“We made a decision to include all hockey players who met the academic standard, whether their team was allowed to play or not,” said AHCA executive director Joe Bertagna. “Those who were denied a chance to compete have already been disadvantaged and we did not want to add to their situation.”

Normally, a student-athlete is required to participate in a minimum of 40% of a team’s games. The honor is open to any program who is a member of the AHCA.

The following “All-American Scholars” should be singled out as they were also voted “All-American” status for their on-ice performances in 2020-21, as well as earning All-American Scholar status:

  • Jack LaFontaine, Senior Goaltender, University of Minnesota: First Team All-American on the ice.
  • Bobby Trivigno, Junior Forward, University of Massachusetts: First Team All-American on the ice.
  • Will Calverley, Junior Forward, Rochester Institute of Technology: Second Team All-American on the ice.
  • Dryden McKay, Junior Goalie, Minnesota State University: Second Team All-American on the ice.
